Creating a Long Lasting Acid-Free Photo Album

What's the big deal about acid-free?

Acid contained in papers, embellishments, adhesives, and any other items that will come into contact with your precious photos can accelerate the disintegration process. Faded colors, brittle textures, and failing adhesives are all examples of acid's effect on your scrapbook. For lasting memories it is important to create acid-free photo albums.

What about lignin-free?

Lignin is a natural substance found in wood and plants that works within the cell walls. Papers and other items are made from plant and wood products and in turn often contain lignin. Unfortunately, as lignin breaks down, it turns paper yellow or brown. So we don't want our scrapbooks turning yellow do we? So we avoid using products containing lignin in our precious scrapbooks.

There are methods that we can use to slow these naturals processes so that our scrapbooks last generations. 

Most of the scrapbooking products on the market these days are acid-free/lignin-free and generally regarded as safe to use in your scrapbooks. This makes creating long-lasting layouts and acid-free photo albums much easier to create.

Unfortunately, the memorabilia we collect and some of the more eclectic embellishments that we use were not created with archival quality in mind. 

So what do we do? 

For memorabilia, we can scan it into our computers and print a duplicate copy on acid-free/lignin-free paper. This is an easy option if you don't have many items. But can become very time consuming with lots of memorabilia.

Luckily, the scrapbook business has grown to be so huge, that several products are now available to neutralize the acid in our memorabilia or contain the item within a sleeve that keeps it's acid away from your precious photos.
